Spiritual Preface: On Vision and the Sacred Task of Art
By Erik Stefan Kost
Some lives are shaped not only by time or circumstance, but by mystery—by a quiet pull toward what lies beneath the surface of the world. My work emerges from such a life, shaped by attentiveness to what cannot always be named.
From an early age, I sensed a hidden order within the visible world. Not all of it is easily understood. We live in an age where meaning can feel fragile, where memory and reverence are often thinned by speed and distraction. Beauty risks becoming surface, faith a hollow routine, and the deeper life of the soul is easily overlooked.
Within this landscape, I was given a particular way of seeing—not as an accomplishment, but as a responsibility. At times, it feels as though a veil grows thin, allowing moments of clarity and presence to appear together. This awareness has guided both my solitude and my work.
My art is not made to decorate, but to bear quiet witness—to the fractures of the world and to the traces of the divine that continue to appear within it. I work without brushes, using only my hands and fingers. Each image is made slowly, as an act of care: an icon for a searching age, an offering of attention and remembrance.
As a first-generation Ukrainian American, descended from those displaced by war and history, I carry inherited memory within my work. Yet beyond lineage, my art is shaped by a steady longing—for the sacred, for depth, for mystery in a culture inclined toward immediacy.
I am not concerned with belonging to an art world or standing apart from it. I am concerned with what endures. With light that remains. With silence that still speaks.
To create under such conditions is an act of listening. To witness is an act of faith. This work is not only personal; it is a quiet offering shaped by memory, humility, and hope.
If anything within these images touches the soul, may it be because they gesture toward what continues to call us inward, and home.
